How to Configure a Desk Phone for HFA@Home on Mitel OpenScape Business

1. Purpose

This engineer/admin guide covers configuring a desk phone and an extension to operate in HFA@Home mode (External with no VPN).

2. Prerequisites

  • Admin access to the OpenScape Business WBM (web interface)
  • PBX local management IP/hostname and administrator credentials
  • External Public Internet IP of the PBX
  • User’s extension
  • Desk phone connected to the network, Web management interface accessible
  • NOTE: This will only work on an external site to the customers main L2 (Private Datacentre Connect) sites. Broadband connected sites for example.

3. Log into the PBX

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Browse to: https://<PBX-IP>
  3. Sign in using administrator credentials.

4. Change the extension to operate in HFA@HOME mode

Navigation: Expert mode → Telephony Server → Station → Station → IP Clients

  1. Find the extension and click the blue arrow next to it. This will open the advanced configuration page for the extension.
  2. Navigate to the “Edit workpoint client data” tab
  3. Enable “Authentication active” flag
  4. The “New password” and “Confirm password” fields are now editable. Set a password for the extension. This will need to be used on the desk phone.
  5. Enable “Internet Registration with internal SBC” flag
  6. Click “Apply”

5. Configure the desk phone

  1. Navigate to the management web interface of the desk phone LAN IP.
  2. Navigate to the “Administrator settings” tab and login with the device’s administrator password (default password is “123456”).
  3. Complete setting up the desk phone
  4. System System Identity
    • Enter the extension number in the Terminal Number
    • Click “Submit” button
  5. In System
    • IP address use the Public IP address of the PBX
    • Subscriber Number – Extension Number
    • Password – The password you set on the PBX
    • Click “Submit” button
  6. Network Update Service
    • DLS Address – Public IP address of the PBX
    • Click “Submit” button
  7. If the phone does not connect within 20 seconds, Restart the phone (MaintenanceRestart phone)

6. Verification checklist

  1. Place an internal test call to and from the desk phone
  2. Place an external outbound test call
